What is Brain Spotting?

I began my personal journey with brainspotting when I was in the depths of postpartum depression after having my daughter Chloe. Y’all, it.was.rough. I was in such a bad place, I didn’t even recognize myself. I found a specialist in my area and within a single session, I confronted core beliefs that had haunted me for years, emerging with a newfound sense of liberation. 

Now I cannot promise these results for everybody because everybody's different. But I knew then and there, this modality is life-changing

So what is brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a brain and body based therapy that works from the bottom up that takes people from dysregulation to regulation. It begins to heal and moves traumas, wether you remember them or not, out of your brain and out of your nervous system so they are no longer subconsciously blocking you from your fullest expression and fullest potential. 

When we go through traumatic experiences, they can be so overwhelming to the brain. They start to fragment off and don't get filed where the regular memories are stored. In an instant, our brain and body go into fight, flight freeze or fawn, which results in the discharge of a high-level of adrenaline and cortisol, and that trauma response gets stuck in our nervous system.

As we move throughout our lives, we are collecting these fragmented memories somatically, but also in the brain that it begins to wreak fricken’ havoc on our systems. Some of the traumas we are aware of, but many of them we are not. This affects our capability to tap into our creativity, in our energetic field. So brainspotting works really deep into the brain to reprogram the mind in a healthy way, and helps release the energy that is trapped in the body. 

So, how does it work? During a brainspotting session, we access trauma that's stored deep in the brain and different layers of the nervous system through your visual field. 

Picture this: you're seated comfortably across from someone you trust whether that is your therapist, coach or a close friend, with bilateral music playing in your ears, syncing your brain hemispheres and initiating the release of calming hormones. You identify the issue you want to work on, and from there you close your eyes and visualize the issue, allowing it to surface for healing. 

So then, we’ll pinpoint a "brain spot," and with my clients I use a pointer - think a teacher using it on a board, but I like to call it my wand. Makes it so much more fun! ;) Anyways, this brain spot is a specific eye position that accesses the stored trauma in your brain and body. As you focus on this spot, something profound happens – you begin to process and release what once held you captive, my love. That anxiety and those fears…whatever has been holding you back.

The trauma is deep in the brain and in the body, which is why I believe you need body-based and brain-based therapy to really resolve the trauma. 

There is so much more that goes on in the process, which I may dive into later, but for now I want to talk about something we call the dual attunement frame. The first part of the attainment is my relationship to you and the fact that I’m with you holding space. I am witnessing your healing. The second part of that is the neurobiology of what’s happening when you’re looking at the spot and what is being accessed deep within the brain. 

Last week I assisted with a brainspotting training. And during that training we heard from Dr. David Grand, the guy who discovered brainspotting. He talked about the latest revelations  in neuroscience, in nervous system science and in spirituality. I asked the question about where do the traumatic memories get stuck in the brain, and what he told me was so profound. He said “I suspect it’s everywhere. It’s like energy, every cell in our bodies hosts all of the trauma we’ve endured.” 

YES. YES. YES! If you’ve noticed what I’ve been passionate about this year, it’s energy in the electromagnetic field and how we find tine our energy to begin to turn the lights on for everything that’s already in the field. So, this goes into an even bigger picture of how we think to heal the trauma individually. It’s more of how do we heal, period

This is a MAJOR thing. I love it. 

This work is so freaking powerful. After my own experience with brainspotting, I decided to go through trainings and become certified. I am driven by a passion to share its transformative potential with others, just as I am sharing with you today, mama. I am certified in phases one and two, and I am currently working on phases three and four.
